Hamburger Potato Casserole

Here’s a hearty, comforting classic: Hamburger Potato Casserole—layers of seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, and creamy, cheesy goodness. It’s perfect for family dinners or meal prep.


🥘 Hamburger Potato Casserole


Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef

  • 1 small onion, diced

  • 2 garlic cloves, minced

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, thinly sliced (Yukon Gold or Russet work best)

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup (or use cream of cheddar or cream of chicken)

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (plus extra for topping)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp paprika (optional)

  • Cooking spray or butter (for greasing dish)


🔪 Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven:

    • Preheat to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. Brown the Beef:

    • In a skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef with diced onion until browned. Add garlic in the last minute. Drain excess grease.

    • Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.

  3. Mix the Sauce:

    • In a bowl, mix the cream of mushroom soup with milk and 1 cup of cheese.

  4. Assemble:

    • Layer half the sliced potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.

    • Spread half the beef mixture over the potatoes.

    • Pour half the soup mixture over the top.

    • Repeat layers: potatoes → beef → sauce.

    • Top with remaining cheese.

  5. Bake:

    • Cover with foil and bake for 60 minutes.

    • Uncover and bake for 20–30 more minutes, until potatoes are tender and top is golden and bubbly.

  6. Let Rest:

    • Let sit for 10 minutes before serving to firm up.

  • Add veggies like corn, peas, or green beans for a one-dish meal.

  • Swap ground beef for ground turkey or sausage for a twist.

  • Use a mandoline to slice potatoes thin and evenly for best results.
