Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort food made from ground beef that’s shaped into a steak-like patty and typically served with a rich brown gravy. It’s often accompanied by mashed potatoes, green beans, or other vegetables.
Here’s a simple and traditional recipe:
Classic Salisbury Steak with Gravy
Ingredients:
For the steaks:
-
1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio is ideal)
-
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
-
1 egg
-
1 small onion, finely chopped or grated
-
1 tbsp ketchup
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
1/2 tsp garlic powder
-
Salt & pepper to taste
For the gravy:
-
2 tbsp butter
-
1 small onion, sliced
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2 cups beef broth
-
1 tbsp ketchup
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
-
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions:
-
Make the patties:
-
In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Mix until just combined. Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.
-
-
Brown the patties:
-
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, until nicely browned (they don’t have to be cooked through yet). Remove and set aside.
-
-
Make the gravy:
-
In the same pan, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until soft and golden, about 5 minutes.
-
Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
-
Gradually add beef broth while stirring. Then add ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.
-
Simmer until thickened (about 5–10 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.
-
-
Finish cooking:
-
Return the patties to the skillet, spoon some gravy over them, and simmer for another 10–15 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked.
-
Serve with:
-
Mashed potatoes
-
Egg noodles
-
Steamed green beans or peas
