π§ Classic Patty Melt Recipe
Ingredients (Makes 2):

Β½ lb (225g) ground beef (80/20 preferred)

4 slices rye or sourdough bread

4 slices Swiss or American cheese (or a combo)

1 large onion, thinly sliced

2 tablespoons butter (plus more for grilling)

Salt & pepper to taste

Optional: Thousand Island or spicy mayo for spread

Caramelize the Onions:

In a skillet over medium-low heat, melt 1 tbsp butter.

Add sliced onions with a pinch of salt.

Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20β25 minutes until soft, golden, and sweet. Set aside.

Form & Cook the Patties:

Shape beef into 2 thin, wide patties roughly the shape of your bread.

Season with salt and pepper.

In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook patties for 3β4 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked to your preference. Set aside.

Assemble the Patty Melt:

Butter one side of each bread slice.

On the unbuttered side, layer:
1 slice of cheese
1 beef patty
Caramelized onions
1 more slice of cheese
Top with another slice of bread (buttered side out)

Grill the Sandwich:

In a skillet or griddle over medium heat, grill each sandwich for 3β4 minutes per side until golden brown and cheese is melted. Press gently with a spatula.

Slice in half and serve hot with pickles, fries, or chips.
