🍯 Golden Syrup Dumplings
🧂 Ingredients:
For the dumplings:
-
1 cup (150g) self-raising flour
-
1 tbsp butter (cold, cubed)
-
1/3 cup (80ml) milk
-
1 egg (optional, for richer dough – can be skipped)
-
Pinch of salt
For the syrup:
-
1 cup (250ml) water
-
1/2 cup (125ml) golden syrup
-
1/4 cup (55g) brown sugar
-
1 tbsp butter
🥣 Instructions:
1. Make the syrup:
In a medium saucepan (wide enough to fit all dumplings), combine water, golden syrup, brown sugar, and butter. Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat while stirring. Lower the heat once combined—keep warm while making the dumplings.
2. Make the dumpling dough:
-
In a bowl, sift the flour and salt.
-
Rub in the butter with your fingertips until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs.
-
Stir in the milk (and egg if using) to form a soft dough. Don’t overmix.
3. Shape dumplings:
Roll dough into small balls (about the size of a walnut). You should get 10–12 dumplings.
4. Cook:
Gently drop dumplings into the simmering syrup. Cover the pan with a lid and simmer over low heat for 15–20 minutes. Do not lift the lid during cooking—this helps them stay fluffy.
🍽️ To Serve:
-
Spoon dumplings into bowls with plenty of syrup.
-
Best served warm with vanilla ice cream, custard, or whipped cream.
🔁 Tips & Variations:
-
No golden syrup? Substitute with maple syrup or honey, though the flavor will be different.
-
Add a pinch of cinnamon or ginger to the syrup for spice.
-
Make it dairy-free by using plant-based butter and milk.
