Posted on August 28, 2025
Here’s a comforting, hearty, and easy-to-make Amish Hamburger Steak Bake — the kind of stick-to-your-ribs dish you’d find in a cozy country kitchen. It combines well-seasoned beef patties with a creamy gravy and is perfect for feeding a hungry family.

🥩🍲 Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

🍽️ Servings: 4–6

⏱️ Total Time: ~1 hour

(15–20 min prep + 40 min bake)

🛒 Ingredients:

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 2 lbs ground beef (80/20 for flavor)

  • 1 small onion, finely diced

  • 1 large egg

  • ½ cup breadcrumbs

  • ¼ cup milk

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

For the gravy topping:

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup

  • ½ cup milk or heavy cream

  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • Optional: ½ cup sliced mushrooms or sautéed onions

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Preheat oven:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.

2. Make the hamburger patties:

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, diced onion, and seasonings.

  2. Mix until just combined (don’t overwork).

  3. Shape into 6–8 oval patties and place them in the baking dish.

3. Mix the gravy:

In a separate bowl, mix together both cans of soup, milk or cream, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper. Stir until smooth.
(Add mushrooms or extra onions if using.)

4. Assemble & bake:

  1. Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the beef patties.

  2. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.

  3. Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes, or until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F) and gravy is bubbly.

5. Serve hot:

Spoon extra gravy over patties when serving. This dish pairs perfectly with:

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Buttered noodles

  • Green beans or corn

  • Buttermilk biscuits

🔄 Optional Additions:

  • Add sliced Swiss or cheddar on top during the last 5 minutes of baking for a cheesy finish.

  • Use cream of celery instead of mushroom for a different flavor twist.

  • Add a dash of paprika or thyme to the beef for more depth.

Would you like a make-ahead freezer version or to adapt it for a slow cooker or cast iron skillet?
