🍽️ Servings: 4–6
⏱️ Total Time: ~1 hour
(15–20 min prep + 40 min bake)
🛒 Ingredients:
For the hamburger steaks:
-
2 lbs ground beef (80/20 for flavor)
-
1 small onion, finely diced
-
1 large egg
-
½ cup breadcrumbs
-
¼ cup milk
-
1 tsp salt
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
½ tsp garlic powder
-
½ tsp onion powder
For the gravy topping:
-
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of mushroom soup
-
1 can (10.5 oz) cream of chicken soup
-
½ cup milk or heavy cream
-
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
-
½ tsp black pepper
-
Optional: ½ cup sliced mushrooms or sautéed onions
👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Preheat oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish.
2. Make the hamburger patties:
-
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, milk, diced onion, and seasonings.
-
Mix until just combined (don’t overwork).
-
Shape into 6–8 oval patties and place them in the baking dish.
3. Mix the gravy:
In a separate bowl, mix together both cans of soup, milk or cream, Worcestershire sauce, and pepper. Stir until smooth.
(Add mushrooms or extra onions if using.)
4. Assemble & bake:
-
Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the beef patties.
-
Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
-
Remove foil and bake an additional 10–15 minutes, or until patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F) and gravy is bubbly.
5. Serve hot:
Spoon extra gravy over patties when serving. This dish pairs perfectly with:
-
Mashed potatoes
-
Buttered noodles
-
Green beans or corn
-
Buttermilk biscuits
🔄 Optional Additions:
-
Add sliced Swiss or cheddar on top during the last 5 minutes of baking for a cheesy finish.
-
Use cream of celery instead of mushroom for a different flavor twist.
-
Add a dash of paprika or thyme to the beef for more depth.
