Salisbury steak

Salisbury steak is a classic American comfort food made from ground beef that’s shaped into a steak-like patty and typically served with a rich brown gravy. It’s often accompanied by mashed potatoes, green beans, or other vegetables.

Here’s a simple and traditional recipe:


Classic Salisbury Steak with Gravy

Ingredients:

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio is ideal)

  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 1 small onion, finely chopped or grated

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • Salt & pepper to taste

For the gravy:

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt & pepper to taste


Instructions:

  1. Make the patties:

    • In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

    • Mix until just combined. Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

  2. Brown the patties:

    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side, until nicely browned (they don’t have to be cooked through yet). Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the gravy:

    • In the same pan, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook until soft and golden, about 5 minutes.

    • Stir in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

    • Gradually add beef broth while stirring. Then add ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.

    • Simmer until thickened (about 5–10 minutes). Season with salt and pepper.

  4. Finish cooking:

    • Return the patties to the skillet, spoon some gravy over them, and simmer for another 10–15 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked.


Serve with:

  • Mashed potatoes

  • Egg noodles

  • Steamed green beans or peas
