Salisbury steak

Posted on June 23, 2025
Here’s a classic and comforting recipe for Salisbury Steak — seasoned ground beef patties simmered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy. It’s like an elevated hamburger with a homestyle twist, perfect served with mashed potatoes or rice.

🥩 Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

Ingredients (Serves 4):

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)

  • ¼ cup breadcrumbs

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon mustard (yellow or Dijon)

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced (white or cremini)

  • 2 tablespoons flour

  • 2 cups beef broth

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

🔥 Instructions:

  1. Make the Steak Patties:

    • In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire, mustard, and seasonings.

    • Form into 4 oval-shaped patties.

  2. Brown the Patties:

    • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a bit of oil and cook patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked through). Remove and set aside.

  3. Make the Gravy:

    • In the same pan, melt butter and add onions and mushrooms. Cook until softened and lightly browned (about 5–7 minutes).

    • Sprinkle flour over and stir for 1 minute to make a roux.

    • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire. Simmer until thickened (4–5 minutes).

  4. Simmer Everything Together:

    • Return the patties to the skillet. Spoon gravy over the top.

    • Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes, until the steaks are fully cooked and tender.

  5. Serve:

    • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, with a ladle of gravy.

🍽 Tips & Variations:

  • Add a splash of cream or Dijon to the gravy for extra richness.

  • Substitute beef with ground turkey or pork for a twist.

  • Make it ahead — it reheats beautifully!
