Spare ribs

Posted on June 22, 2025
Spare ribs are a flavorful, meaty cut from the belly side of the pig — larger and flatter than baby back ribs, with a rich, juicy taste. They’re perfect for slow cooking, grilling, baking, or smoking.

Here’s a basic, fall-off-the-bone oven-baked spare ribs recipe with optional variations for BBQ, spicy, or Asian-style flavors.

🐷 Oven-Baked Spare Ribs Recipe (BBQ Style)

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 3–4 lbs pork spare ribs

  • Salt and pepper

  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon paprika (smoked if you have it)

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon cayenne or chili powder (optional)

  • 1–2 cups BBQ sauce (your favorite)

🔥 Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).

  2. Prep the Ribs:

    • Remove the thin silver skin membrane from the back of the ribs for tenderness.

    • Pat ribs dry and season generously with salt, pepper, and spice rub (mix sugar, paprika, garlic powder, etc.).

  3. Wrap and Bake:

    • Wrap ribs tightly in foil (meat side up) and place on a baking sheet.

    • Bake for 2½ to 3 hours, until tender and meat pulls back from the bones.

  4. Glaze and Broil (Optional):

    • Carefully unwrap ribs and drain excess fat.

    • Brush with BBQ sauce.

    • Broil or grill for 5–10 minutes until caramelized and sticky.

  5. Rest, Slice, and Serve!

    • Let sit 5 minutes before slicing between bones.

🍴 Serving Ideas:

  • Classic sides: coleslaw, cornbread, baked beans, mac & cheese

  • Garnish with chopped parsley, green onion, or sesame seeds (for Asian-style)

🔄 Flavor Variations:

  • Asian-style: Use hoisin, soy, garlic, ginger, and honey glaze

  • Dry rub only: Skip the sauce and go Memphis-style with extra spice rub

  • Spicy: Add chipotle powder, hot sauce, or cayenne to the rub and glaze
